Building a life in your body

There’s a difference between knowing you have a body…
and actually living inside of it.

For a long time, I didn’t understand that difference.

I knew I had a body in the practical sense.
A body that carried groceries.
A body that hiked trails.
A body that held babies.
A body that showed up for responsibilities.

But underneath all of that…
I was often surviving through my body more than living in it.

My body felt like something I managed.
Something that reacted.
Something that exhausted me.
Something I tried to calm down, control, fix, or ignore.

And healing slowly started showing me something different.

That trauma healing is not only about reducing triggers or understanding your past.

It’s also about building a life inside your body that feels safe enough to actually live there.

A life where:
You notice the sunlight on your skin.
You feel your breath move all the way down into your belly.
You laugh without bracing.
You rest without guilt.
You speak and hear your own voice.
You feel sadness without disappearing.
You feel joy without waiting for something bad to happen.

What else would you add? What would you like to experience within your body?

Not perfectly.
Not all the time.
But more and more.

And I think that’s an important distinction.

Because sometimes healing can accidentally become another project of “fixing.”
Always searching for the next trigger.
The next layer.
The next thing to heal.

But at some point…
the invitation becomes:
Can I begin building a life inside this body too?

Not just visiting it during meditation.
Not just checking in when something hurts.

But actually living here.

And honestly?
That can feel so vulnerable.

I feel that too....

Because many of us learned to leave the body in order to survive.
To stay in our heads.
To stay productive.
To stay disconnected from sensations, needs, emotions, boundaries, or rest.

So returning to the body isn’t always calming.
Sometimes it’s unfamiliar.
Sometimes it’s messy......and.....

Sometimes it's terrifying....and/or extremely painful (physically, mentally, emotionally)....

- I get that within my own healing journey -

And...I want to offer that I have found - that when we build and create a safe enough space within our body...

We create a returning that is a powerful form of ownership.

I. have. a. body. AND This. is. my. body.

This returning often starts with tiny moments.

A deeper breath.
A softened jaw.
A moment of noticing beauty.
A pause before reacting.
A choice that finally feels true.

All this matters as we do this work.

Because you are not just healing trauma.

You are building a relationship with the place you live every single day.

Your body.

Here's a tool to try it out:

💛 A Gentle Practice: “Living In My Body” Check-In

Take one slow breath.

Then gently ask yourself:

“What would help me feel a little more here in my body today?”

Not healed.
Not perfect.
Not fixed.

Just…here.

I invite you to see what comes up and then......do or acknowledge what your body offers.

If you need some ideas, you could try some of these:

Maybe your body wants:
A walk.
Stillness.
Music.
A stretch.
Water.
A hand on your heart.
A good cry.
Laughter.
Rest.
Movement.
Support.
Silence.
Connection.

See what arises without forcing it.

And if nothing comes up right away, that’s okay too.

Sometimes healing begins simply by asking the body the question
and letting it know you’re finally willing to listen.

If you need help with any of this, jump on a Free call w/me and I can offer ways you can hear and trust what your body is already telling you.

Lately I've been thinking about, and noticing, vibration. Everything we hear is vibration. The rumble of thunder. The sound of someone's voice. The hum of a fan. Even the sounds we create ourselves through humming, singing, or breathing. Researchers are continuing to discover how sound and vibration influence our nervous system. Certain vibrations appear to support relaxation, reduce pain, and stimulate pathways connected to the vagus nerve, which plays an important role in our body's ability...

Over the last five months, I've been living with a level of back pain that has changed almost every part of my life. I can't hike. I can't run. I can't bike. I can't raft. I can't do many of the things that have always helped me feel like...me. I also haven't been able to stand for long periods of time, sit comfortably, make dinner, shower without pain, or do many of the ordinary, everyday things I've always taken for granted. I know many of you reading this live with chronic pain. While I...

There was a moment during a bodywork session this week that I haven't been able to stop thinking about. I was receiving osteopathic manipulation while my *friend and *colleague was gently working with the fascia around my pelvis. As she began, she quietly said, "Your pelvis feels incredibly tight. It almost doesn't want to move." She knows my trauma history, so she gently added, "That makes sense. Those parts of you probably haven't felt safe." The moment she said those words, something...
