I saw an Instagram post today where someone was letting their audience know they were going to be gone for a bit, it said, "I'll be in the mountains, writing more content." And....they wouldn't be available to answer questions and would be missing a few posts. It made me think... You would have to think ahead of time to do that. I've missed writing three newsletters and didn't let anybody know...... Partly, because I wasn't ever planning on missing them. And the other part....because I've just been so crazy busy that.... 'missing writing' is what has happened. Anybody else feel like they're barely making it through the week? And then barely making it through the weekend? And then the next week? And then the next weekend? And feeling behind and not able to plan ahead? Yeah, that's been me the last few weeks. AND.....I don't want to make this newsletter a low priority. It's important to me. Connecting with you, sharing what I'm learning, and offering tools that might help you feel more at home in your body, reading and replying to your responses.... Those are all things I genuinely want to do. And I also want to give myself - and each of us - permission to recognize that sometimes..... When we're feeling overwhelmed or just have a lot going on, our capacity doesn't match all the things that matter to us. We might have five things that are really important. Five things we genuinely want to do. And we might only end up doing one or two of them. That doesn't mean the other three are less important. It doesn't mean we don't care about them. It doesn't mean we're doing something wrong. It just means that, in that moment, one or two things were what we had the capacity to do and hold within our system. This has been true for me many times before, and I have been reminding myself of this over the last few weeks. It feels true within so many parts of me. And.....then there's that sideways voice..... The one that wants to criticize and judge and tell me I'm doing it wrong. The one that wants to remind me of everything I haven't done, everything I'm behind on, and everything I should have been able to figure out ahead of time. That voice pops up and wants to be heard. And as much as I don't always like hearing it, I'm finding that pausing, letting that voice speak and listening to see if I am missing something.....continues to give me another opportunity for choice. Even amid all the crazy, turning toward that part of me that wants to function from old patterns and give me all the 'shoulds', gives me a chance: To take a look at what's going on. To reevaluate what these last few weeks have actually been like. To check in with what my truth really is. Instead of automatically believing the judgment and criticism, I can see what feels true to me, with my own wisdom and my own system. And this is part of what living in my body and healing through my body continues to teach me. I can recognize that critical voice without having to make it my truth. I can acknowledge that I wish I had gotten more done without deciding that what I did do wasn't enough. I can care deeply about all five things, even when I only have the capacity for one or two. And I can keep checking in with my body and my system to understand what I actually have the capacity to hold right now. Not what I think I should be able to hold. Not what other parts of my body tell me I should be able to hold. Not what someone else might be able to hold. Not what I used to be able to hold. But what is actually available to me. So, if you've also been barely making it through the weeks and weekends, feeling behind, or wondering why you can't seem to get to all the things that matter to you... Maybe there's room to get curious about your capacity instead of judging yourself for it. Maybe there's room to notice that sideways voice without letting it decide what's true. And maybe the things you didn't get done can still matter, without becoming evidence that you're doing something wrong. That's what I'm practicing right now. And apparently, part of that practice has included missing three newsletters. And....I'm glad to be back. Remember, ❤️ You Matter. Your Healing Matters. You Are Worth It! |

I took a picture of the clouds on my drive today because I was struck by all the different types of clouds. And by all. those. layers. Some dark and heavy. Some white and bright. Some that were beautiful from where I was sitting. And it made me think about the layers I’ve moved through while healing trauma. I’ve gone through layers that felt so dark and black that I thought they might take over. They were scary. And when I was inside them, I didn’t know if I would ever get through them. Other...
A few days ago, I was on a trail near my house. It's a trail I used to run when I was short on time. Easy and quick, but still with some fun ups and downs. I knew this trail. Or at least, I knew this trail at a running pace. Since I am just barely able to hike and run again, this time looked different. I ran for one minute and then walked for two or three, continuing that pattern until I was finished. It took longer. And parts of my body wanted to keep running. The trail was so familiar at a...
I often get asked some version of this question: Can I have fun while I’m healing? And the answer is absolutely yes. But I think the way I understand that answer has changed over the years. Healing can take so much energy. Mentally.Physically.Emotionally.Spiritually.Relationally. Sometimes our body is working really hard just to get through what is happening. And I have not found it helpful if the answer is to tell myself, “Come on. Go have fun. Think positively. Enjoy your life”. Sometimes...
